The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, or Honu, is a symbol of good luck and longevity. This painting depicts a large turtle gliding gracefully over a vibrant coral reef. Sunbeams penetrate the clear turquoise water, casting dancing light patterns (caustics) across the turtle’s patterned shell and the surrounding brain coral.

Underwater Light

Using the transparency of watercolor, this piece emphasizes the weightlessness of the sea. The turtle’s flippers are mid-stroke, and small reef fish like the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a dart through the background, adding life and movement to the serene underwater sanctuary.
